The Huairou network counts 101 active members, distributed across six regions – 28 in Africa, 24 in Asia, 4 in the Caribbean, 3 in Europe, 37 in Latin America and 5 in North America.

Huairou Commission members together with the secretariat are strongly committed to help advance all organizations working on grassroots women’s empowerment and leadership. Together with grassroots women leaders and their allies we work to build partnership capacities. Collectively, we part-take in a movement building coalition for grassroots women and a global platform for collective action with regional strategies.

Membership in the Huairou Commission is open to: grassroots organizations led by grassroots women; facilitating NGOs that work in partnership with grassroots women; networks of grassroots women’s organizations; and the founding networks.

We define grassroots women’s organizations as women led community organizations working on strengthening their community-specific processes of development by joining with others and providing leadership to collective action by the community.

As members of the Huairou Commission, we take part in a learning and advocacy community of grassroots women leaders, their organizations, and alliance partners. We are working together to fulfil our mission of empowering grassroots women leaders to strengthen their community development practices and transform public policies at local, national, regional and global levels. Our community is influenced by the social movement based on peer learning, shared advocacy, and mutual capacity building.

Our members are supported by systematic engagement and mentorship towards growth and capacity building. Each member grows to reach mature status in the movement according to the member established 4C criteria:

The Huairou Membership Committee is responsible for monitoring the state of membership within the network, including delivering support to the member groups and reviewing membership applications. Each of the global network members is carefully assessed against the 4C criteria and is assigned a membership status in line with one of three categories: Associate, Advanced, Intermediate. Each member receives peer support to mature within the movement to become an Advanced member with full decision-making rights in the network.

The Membership Committee, consisting of the Governing Council members and regional representatives, can be contacted directly by members and those interested in joining the Huairou Commission with all membership related inquiries.
