Happy 2018! We are pleased to announce that Maimunah Mohd Sharif of Malaysia, elected Executive Director of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) on December 22, 2017 will take office January 22, 2018.Ms. Sharif succeeds Joan Clos of Spain who championed, while in Office, the development of the New Urban Agenda and the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG11), which was the first development goal to focus on sustainable urbanization.

Ms. Sharif is currently Mayor of the City Council of Penang Island, Malaysia. Prior to her appointment as Mayor, she was the first woman to be appointed as President of the Municipal Council of Seberang Perai in 2011. The incoming Executive Director’s proven commitment to strengthening the role of local governments and grassroots community stakeholders in realizing an inclusive New Urban Agenda establishes a strong foundation for partnering

with the grassroots groups and activists in our network who are committed to empowering women as leaders of

sustainable urban development. Working closely with Ms. Sharif and UN Habitat staff, our members are

confident we can collaboratively produce opportunities and a better quality of life for women, their families and communities.
