“Countering the Backlash: Keeping Gender-Based Violence on the Agenda”

This dialogue will be co-hosted by GBV Action Coalition leaders, UN Women together with Breakthrough and will bring together member states, leaders and commitment makers of the Action Coalition on GBV to support critical reflection on the implications of the push-back on women’s rights and the shrinking space for civil society, on ending gender-based violence against women and girls in all their diversity. The dialogue will also be focused on proposing solutions and highlighting examples of success.

Objectives of the Dialogue

  • To facilitate member state and civil society reflection on global trends related to the push back on women’s rights and the implications for prevalence of GBV, and for adaptive and comprehensive prevention and response efforts to address all forms of gender-based violence against women and girls in all their diversity.
  • To support discussion on strategies and approaches to reassert the GBV agenda as priority and encourage application of a comprehensive approach to GBV at national level.
  • To support critical discussion on strategies to amplify and to accelerate financing of WROs as change makers, advocates, and defenders of women’s human rights with the view to accelerate progress on ending GBV.
  • To reflect on the interconnectivity between push back on various gender equality themes and the implications for addressing gender-based violence against women and girls in all their diversity.
  • To reflect upon the role that member states and other stakeholders can play to support the efforts of women’s rights activists and movements in resisting the pushback on women’s rights, specifically in relation to ending gender-based violence against women and girls.
  • To document and to share critical reflections and lessons learned which emerge from the dialogue.

Lana Finikin, member of Huairou’s Governing Council and part of the Global Coalition on Inclusive Safe Spaces and Cities for Women and Girls will be speaking at this event. Lana is also a founding member and the Executive Director of the Sistren Theatre Collective, Jamaica.
