Grassroots women leaders of the Huairou Commission take the achievement of the 2030 Agenda as seriously as any set of actors on the global stage. The 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals it puts forth, is a United Nations “plan of action for people, planet and prosperity.”
For the Huairou Commission, the 2030 agenda refers to the Sustainable Development Goals, the New Urban Agenda and the Sendai Framework for Action.
For grassroots women leaders, the 2030 Agenda, as well as the New Urban Agenda, the plan for its implementation, are vital tools for development. They provide a framework for organizing action and for relating to and influencing local and national authorities across sectors. In some cases, HC members have become the experts on the 2030 Agenda, training government officials, students and community members. HC members have also developed expertise in monitoring if and how the action plan is being implemented. In addition to pressing for knowledge and implementation of the 2030 Agenda, HC members represent grassroots women’s interests at global forums, presenting their work, connecting with UN and government representatives and influencing declarations and other policy documents.
